Last Sunday, dead early in the morning, something like seven o’clock or something and I had been up until two or three that morning, so I was seriously knackered, the phone rang.
I picked it up and the first thing I said was, “Hello Iya!”
My Iya is the only person who calls me that early in the morning, except it was actually my Baba calling me from Nigeria.
He has done this once before.
He asked me how I was, and told me he’d answer my email the next day and I told him it was cool and that I was kinda feeling a little better and then we got disconnected.
I hung up and fell right back to sleep, but the sleep was deeper, stronger.
I don’t know how much longer it was, but he called back again. Here’s the thing:
Since I was a little girl, I’ve been known to have full blown conversations with people in my sleep. I have also had dreams where I was sleeping and people called me and we talked in my dream. My grandmother says she has given up on it, and is never sure she’s really talking to us, that is, myself, my mother or brother until we are on our feet and walking around, because although the conversations may be lucid, we are in fact actually fast asleep.
I think I had one of those moments when Baba called me back the second time. I remember him saying hello, and then I think I remember asking him to call me back again later in the week, but at the time, I thought I was dreaming.
I wasn’t sure we had spoken, until later that afternoon when I went to my ile’s ijuba and he called from Nigeria to share greetings with everyone who was there. I asked him then if he had called the second time, and he said yes.
I have been worrying about that phone call ever since.
How could I tell him to call back? Why didn’t I wake up!!
Also, he hasn’t answered my e-mails since then and now I think he might be a little annoyed with me!
