Nation Newspaper Senior Associate Editor was in Grenada late last week, reporting on the devastation there.
It’s awful, 80, 000 homeless people, desperate for drinking water in the 33 degree celsius heat.
He managed to get an opportunity to talk to Bernard Coard, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Grenada who was the mastermind behind Maurice Bishop’s overthrow and assassination.
From this picture, although his formerly shaven face has given way to grey hairs, he looks remarkably healthy. Coard is serving life in Richmond Hill Prison with 18 others who were originally sentenced to death for their parts in Bishop’s assassination.
It is said that after the prison was damaged in the recent onslaught of Hurricane Ivan, Coard, along with dozens of prison inmates, took off and went roaming the island in search of the whereabouts of their families.
However, Coard is noted as having returned to the prison once he was sure of his families safety. He is reported as having said that the only way he will leave Richmond Hill, is if the people of Grenada free him.
The photo was taken by Nation photographer Antonio Miller on the sly.
